Game Lab 1

Red Flag: The game of terrible date! A game where you set up a player on a date but the player has to pick which date is the best regardless of their red flag. In Red Flags, your goal is to use "Perk" cards to create the best date for "The Single" (the judge for this round). However, there is a catch. Players may also play "Red Flags" (bad traits) in an attempt to sabotage another player's hot date. Each player has an opportunity to argue why their date is the best one for "The Single," who chooses which awful date wins.

I played this game with my classmates in my Intro to Games Studies class in SJSU. We had a total of 5 players: Limberly, Eugene, Junmin, Randy and myself (Samantha).

This is how we played this game:

We will have one Bachelor who will choose their blind date out of the four potential “dates.” Each player has three red cards and four white cards. Each player picks two white cards to appeal to the bachelor/bachelorette. After that, each player picks one red card to try to hurt the chances of the person next to them. The bachelor/bachelorette picks the best set of cards, and whoever those cards belong to wins.

My group played around 5 rounds. This is how one of our rounds went play by play:

Round 1: Eugene is the Bachelor

The rest of the group has to present two white cards/ Two potential date’s traits:

Kimberly Cards/ Potential dates:

  • First card: “You’ll never have to work while you date them

  • Second card: “Loves dog”

Samantha’s Cards/ Potential date:

  • “Astronaut”

  • “Animal Shelter volunteer”

Randy Cards/ Potential date:

  •  “Owns a successful startup”

  • “Can get you both into literally anywhere”

Junmin’s Card/Potential date:

  • Loves the 80s”

  • “Believes you are the most attractive person they’ve ever seen”

After everyone has selected their white cards, they have to select a red card to sabotage their neighbor.

For example, I (Samantha) gave my neighbor Randy a red flag card that said the date is a serial killer. This goes on until everyone gives their neighbor a red flag card. Then, everyone has pleaded their case that their date is the best, even with their red flag. Finally, the Bachelor (Eugene) selects her date, who is Randy, “Owns a successful startup, can get you both into literally anywhere, and is a serial killer”. With that, it was game over, and Randy won that round. What is nice about this game is that you can play it multiple times; it’s not too long, and it’s very humorous. Within my group, we played about 5 times, and I was able to win one round. This is a game I would recommend for a group of friends.
